a big plus, but also a major minus, in the latest unemployment report released this morning. at the positive end: 171-thousand people landed jobs last month. but, the down side: the unemployment rate rose to 7- point-9 percent. the increase is a sign more and more people are trying to find work. pointed out unemployment is higher now than when president obama took office. he argued that he has a plan to make real changes to fix the job market. early voting ends tomorrow. in chicago. there is one early voting site per ward, plus the

chicago election boardice she pleaded with a man for help, but claims he refused. a reporter tracked down that man, who will only go by the name "alan." he shared his side of the story. two year old brendan and four year old connor were found a few blocks away from that home. and the frustration continues to grow. in the aftermath of sandy. across 15 states and the district of columbia, 3-point-3 million customers remain without power. staten island was one of the hardest hit areas. at one point, a woman screamed at reporters that in the last 48 hours, all she had eaten was a slice of pizza. she told senatore chuck schumer "we are going to die. help arrived last night- when ten red cross trucks showed up with food, water and medicine. the super storm also dumped

has drawn national attention because smith won the democratic primary. early polls show smith with an overwhelming lead. >>a driver going the wrong way ends up crashing into another car on lake shore drive. it happened around four this morning near 55th street. police say a 28-year-old woman was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when she crashed into another car. a man driving the car that was

hit was taken to the hospital in good condition. the woman was also taken into custody. no other injures were reported. the chicago police department, already under fire in the courts for tolerating a code of silence, now faces a lawsuit from two of its own. undercover officers shannon spalding and daniel echeverria claim they were harassed and driven from their jobs after doing their duty of uncovering cops who committed crimes. their lawsuit filed yesterday says the retaliation came from fellow cops as well as the leaders of the department. one of the defendants named in the lawsuit, is the same deputy superintendent who was recently called to testify in the notorious bartender beating case of former officer anthony abbate. the officers are seeking more than a half-million dollars in damages. as for the abbate case. a federal jury heard about in- fighting between chicago police and the state's attorney's office on how to handle the off-duty officer's video-taped beating of a female bartender.

a police commander testified that it was prosecutors who wanted abbate charged with a misdemeanor. but state's attorneys have testified there were no early discussions about what type of charges to file. the lawsuit by bartender karolina obrycka accuses the police department of trying to keep quiet about the crime to protect abbate. there's been another arrest in the celebrity sex abuse scandal gripping england. it started with a report that famed t-v personality jimmy savile allegedly molested hundreds of children over several decades. savile died last year at the age of 84. now comes word that entertainer freddie star has been arrested in connection with the investigation. on sunday. 1970s pop star gary glitter was arrested on suspicion of sexual offenses. investigators also want to know how the alleged abuse went undetected by the b-b-c for so many years.
